Kumbakonam(Tamil:கும்பகோணம்), also known as Kudanthai, is a city municipal corporation situated in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, India. It lies 40 km away from Thanjavur and 282 km from Chennai. The city serves as the administrative headquarters of the Kumbakonam taluk and is the second-largest city in the district after Thanjavur.
The region surrounding Kumbakonam has a rich history dating back to the Sangam Age (3rd century BCE to 3rd century CE). The present-day city is believed to have been the location of the ancient town of Kudavayil, where the Early Chola king Karikala is said to have held his court.
