Chennai(Tamil:சென்னை), formerly known as Madras, is the capital and largest city of Tamil Nadu, located on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal in eastern India. According to the 2011 Indian census, it is the sixth-most populous city in the country and ranks as the fourth-most populous urban agglomeration. Chennai was incorporated in 1688 and is home to the Greater Chennai Corporation, the oldest municipal corporation in India and the second oldest in the world after London.
The city boasts significant historical landmarks, including Fort St. George, built in 1644, which now serves as a museum showcasing Chennai’s origins as a British military garrison and East India Company trading post when it was known as Madras.
